How to read a long sentence

みなさん、こんにちは!

I will write about grammars today.
When you read a long sentence, watch particles first.
For example (from my former entry in Panda article),

前原誠司外相18日記者会見
日中関係改善観点から
東京・上野動物園中国から貸与されるパンダ2頭
21日到着すること歓迎。

(person)(date)(interview)
(China-Japan relations improvement)(view point)から
(Ueno zoo)(China)から(Panda)
(date)(arriving)(welcome)

Let’s break it down a little bit more.
There are three basic Japanese sentence structures and the most important part comes at the end.
①(noun)は(noun)
②(noun)は(adjective)
③(noun)は(verb(intransitive))/(noun)は(object)を(verb(transitive))
The end of the example sentence is “歓迎(する)= to welcome”, so it is ③.

Make it this long example sentence basic.

(person)(arriving)(welcome)。
Mr. Maehara welcomes arriving.

Others are additional information. We will see it reversal.Underline parts are added at each stage.

 (person)は(Panda)が(arriving)を(welcome)。
Mr. Maehara welcomes the Panda Bears arriving.

(person)は(Ueno zoo)に(China)から(Panda)が(date)に(arriving)を(welcome)。
Mr. Maehara welcomes the two Panda Bears from China arriving on Feb 21st to Ueno zoo.

(person)は(China-Japan relations improvement)の(view point)から(Ueno zoo)に(China)から(Panda)が(date)に(arriving)を(welcome)。
Mr. Maehara welcomes the two Panda Bears from China arriving on Feb 21st to Ueno zoo from the view point of China-Japan relations improvement.

(person)は(date)の(interview)で、(China-Japan relations improvement)の(view point)から(Ueno zoo)に(China)から(Panda)が(date)に(arriving)を(welcome)。
On Feb 18th Press Interview, Mr. Maehara welcomes the two Panda Bears from China arriving on Feb 21st to Ueno zoo from the view point of China-Japan relations improvement.

Hope it helps you to understand Japanese sentence structures.

日経新聞 Nikkei Shimbun (Japanese Economic Newspaper)

みなさん、こんにちは!
I think the number of non-Japanese speakers who speaks very good Japanese has increased.
I am impressed when I see someone who is reading Nikkei Shimbun (Japanese Economic Newspaper) or Japanese paperbacks on the train.
Nikkei Shimbun is short for Nihon Keizai(economy) Shimbum(newspaper) and often called Nikkei.
Many people who study Business Japanese want to be able to read Nikkei.
I read an article titled “Business people reading Nikkei which is ambitious and a very high bar”
Not to mention, this is about Japanese people.
It means they are trying so hard to read difficult Nikkei Shimbun.
I think one in suit on the train reading Nikkei on the train looks cool more than reading Manga.

基礎は大切 basics are important

みなさん、こんにちは!

I am always writing my Blog in N4 level (both grammars and Kanji), it is not difficult if you finished Minnano Nihongo or Japanese for Busy People.
(News are different.)
Incidentally, I explained you “It takes long time to study language” and also introduced a proverb “Haste makes waste”.
I could understand if one passed N5 he wants to proceed to N4, N3.
And some people need N2 or N1 for their jobs.
Study language is “Step-by-step” so basics are very important.
Some people whose levels are N2 or N1 but they sometimes need to go back to N4 or N5 because they do not understand the basics.
It is waste of time and energy.
Study the basics up to N4 level well so it will be easier for you later.

私のブログはN4レベル(文法も漢字も)でいつも書いていますから、「みんなの日本語」や”Japanese for Busy People” が終わった方は、難しくないと思います。
(ニュースは別です)
   私(わたし)のブログ: my blog
   文法(ぶんぽう): grammars
   漢字(かんじ): Kanji
   AもBも: also A and B
   書(か)いています: I am writing
   ~が終(お)わった方(かた): one who fished ~
   難(むずか)しくない: not difficult
   ~と思(おも)います: I think that ~

Japanese basic grammars

みなさん、こんにちは!

Today I will write about “Japanese basic grammars”.
It is said that there are about 100 Japanese basic grammars which you study with the textbooks like “Minnano Nihongo 1&2” or “Japanese for Busy People 1-3”
When you become to be able to use all of them, it is “daily conversational level” which is JLPT N4 Level.
The number of vocabulary and grammar level is related for any language, , you know about 1500 words and 300 Kanji when you are at N4.
Therefore, there is no meaning to go through only grammars quickly for JLPT.
“More haste, less speed” (proverb)

 今日は「日本語の基本文法」について書きましょう。
   今日(きょう)は: today
   日本語(にほんご)の基本(きほん)文法(ぶんぽう): Japanese basic grammars
   ~について: about ~
   書(か)きましょう: will write
日本の基本文法は約100個あると言われています。
   約(やく): about
   個(こ): counter for small object
~と言(い)われています: it is said that ~
   verb plain + と言われています
「みんなの日本語1&2」や「Japanese for Busy People 1~3」 で勉強する文法です。
   ~で: with, by, using
   勉強(べんきょう)する文法: grammars that you study
そしてこの文法が全部使えると、日常会話レベルになり、JLPTのN4レベルです。
   そして: and, then,
   全部(ぜんぶ): everything, all of them
   使(つか)える: can use, (potential form)
   日常(にちじょう)会話(かいわ)レベル: daily conversational level
   ~になる: become ~
どの言語でも文法のレベルと言葉の数は関係していますから、N4のレベルなら約1500個の言葉と約300個の漢字がわかるはずです。
   どの言語(げんご)でも: any language
   言葉(ことば): words, vocabulary
   数(かず): number
   関係(かんけい)している: related
   漢字(かんじ): Kanji
   ~はずです: supposed to ~
ですから、JLPTのために急いで文法だけ勉強しても、言葉の数を増やせないのであまり意味がありません。
   ですから: therefore
   ~のために: for
   急(いそ)いで: quickly
   ~だけ: only ~
   ~ても: even ~
   増(ふ)やせない: cannot increase
   あまり+ negative: not really
   意味(いみ)がありません: there is no meanings
「急がば回れ(ことわざ)」です。
   急(いそ)がば回(まわ)れ: More haste, less speed.
                    Hast makes waste.
Slow but steady wins the race.
Rushing things will cost you more time in the end.

about study Japanese 日本語の勉強について

みなさん、こんにちは!

I will write about study Japanese today.
First of all, you need to understand “It takes time to study language.”
Especially Euro-American languages and Japanese are very different, it is much harder to learn Spanish for English speakers, for example.
Also if one who didn’t know Japanese at all says “I went to Tokyo to see a movie and then had dinner afterwards”, other people around him think his Japanese improved very much.
(He who works during day time can make the sentence in about 3 months with twice a week lessons.)
But if ones who are now at JLPT N4 or N3 level, nobody including himself would feel his Japanese was improved.
(to be continued )

今日は日本語の勉強について書きますね。
  今日: today
  日本語(にほんご)の勉強(べんきょう): study Japanese
  ~について: about ~
  書(か)きます: will write
最初に「言語の勉強は時間がかかります」ということを理解する必要があります。
  最初(さいしょ)に: first of all
  言語(げんご): language
  時間(じかん)がかかります: it takes time
  ~ということを理解(りかい)する: to understand what ~
  必要(ひつよう)があります: you need to, require
特に欧米系の言語と日本語は全然違いますから、例えば英語話者がスペイン語を勉強する場合より大変です。
  特(とく)に: especially
  欧米系(おうべいけい): Euro-American
  全然(ぜんぜん)違(ちが)います: very different
  例(たと)えば: for example
  英語(えいご)話者(わしゃ): English speakers
  スペイン語(ご): Spanish
(Verb Plain From) + 場合(ばあい): case
  大変(たいへん)です: hard
また日本語を全然知らなかった人が、「私は昨日東京に行って映画を見て食事をしました」というセンテンスを作ったら、周りの人はとても上手になったと思うでしょう。
  また: in addition, or, besides
全然(ぜんぜん)知(し)らなかった人(ひと): one who didn’t know at all
  昨日(きのう): yesterday
  東京(とうきょう)に行(い)って:
went to Tokyo (and)… (Te-Form connective)
  映画(えいが)を見(み)て: watch a movie (and) … (Te-Form connective)
  食事(しょくじ)をしました: had meal
~というセンテンスを作(つく)ったら: if (he) make the sentence (of ~)
  周(まわ)りの人(ひと): people around
  上手(じょうず)になった: improved
~と思(おも)うでしょう: people around him would think that ~
(普段仕事をしているビジネスマンが、1週間に2回ぐらいレッスンをして、3カ月ぐらいでこのセンテンスが作れるようになります)
  普段(ふだん): usually
仕事(しごと)をしているビジネスマン: business person who works usually
  1週間(しゅうかん)に2回(かい)ぐらい: about twice a week
  レッスンをする: takes lessons
  3カ月(さんかげつ)ぐらいで: within about three months

good practices

みなさん、こんにちは!

I wrote in my former entry “you need to pull your level up to the point “to be able to make sentences” not only “to be able to understand when you listen/read”.
What would it be good practices for it?
First of all, when you learn a new grammar, make sentences expressing about yourself.
You would forget soon if you only read the sentences on the book and repeat your teacher.
And compositions are good practices too.
Use the grammars and the situations you have studied in the class and write a composition about your own version.
Gambatte kudasai!

二重否定 Double Negative for JLPT N2 読解 reading comprehension

みなさん、こんにちは!

今日はN2読解の二重否定について書きます。
I will write about "double negative" for N2 level reading comprehension today.

読解文の中で二重否定が使われることがよくあります。
間違えやすいので気をつけましょう。
Double negative is often used and it is misread, so read carefully.

<重要> 二重否定の意味は肯定です。
       Double negative meaning is affirmative/positive.

how to make your Japanese sound better

みなさん、こんにちは!

I had a discussion with a new student about his study plans.
He spoke very beautiful Japanese.
Why I said “beautiful” is there was no mistakes in his Japanese.
Even if someone who is at 2kyu or 1kyu level but has lots of mistakes, it would ruin everything and degrade his Japanese.
For example, talking about trips “~wa kirei katta”  "~wa oishii datta” or “ookii no otera o mimashita” and so on are common mistakes.
Probably it would be like wearing fine cloths with lots of soy-sauce spots.
If you would like to improve your Japanese, it is very important to study difficult grammars and vocabularies, however, it is also quite effective to correct your current mistakes at your level now.

- words & phrases -

先日(せんじつ): shortly before
相談(そうだん)する: to consult

General features of Japanese sentence structures + grammars - 3

みなさん、こんにちは!

Today's entry is about Verbs and Adjectives and the last one of Japanese grammar basics.

(8) Verbs

* three groups
 Group 1 (70%), Group 2 (30%), Irregular (two verbs)

* basic verb conjugations
 ①Masu-form, ②Nai-form, ③Dictionary-form, ④Conditional-form,
 ⑤Volitional-form, ⑥Te-form and ⑦Ta-Form
Ex. (to go) ①Iki-masu, ②Ikanai, ③Iku, ④Ikeba, ⑤Iko, ⑥Itte, ⑦Itta.

* tenses
①present form : habitual action and future
Ex. Tanaka san wa mainiti kaisha ni ikimasu. (Mr. Tanaka goes to the office every day.)

 * For expressing present on-going action, different verb conjugation “te-form” is used.
Ex. Kare wa ima hirugohan o tabete imasu. (He is having lunch now.)

②past form : past and present perfect
Ex. Kare wa senshu Kyoto ni ikimashita. (He went/has been to Kyoto last week.)

(9) Adjectives

* two groups :
①i-adjective(Japanese origin words) and ②na-adjective(foreign words origin).

 ①I-adjectives end with “i”.
Ex. Kyo wa atsui desu. (Today is hot. = It is hot today.)

②Na-adjectives do not end with “na” when they modify a noun, they must be followed by na.
Ex. Kyoto wa yumeena machi desu. (Kyoto is a famous town.)

 * conjugation : Japanese adjectives have conjugations
(present affirmative, present negative, past affirmative, past negative)
Ex. i-adjective "kawaii (cute)” -> kawaii, kawaikunai, kawaikatta, kawaikunakatta
na-adjective “shizuka (quiet)” -> shizuka, shizuka janai, shizuka deshita, shizuka janakatta

* present form : present
Ex. Kyo wa atsui desu. (Today is hot. = It is hot today.)
* For expressing future tense, different form which conveys inference is used.
Ex. Ashita wa atsui desho. (It will (probably) be hot tomorrow.)
* past form : past
Ex. Kino wa atsukatta desu. (Yesterday was hot. = It was hot yesterday.)

General features of Japanese sentence structures + grammars - 2

みなさん、こんにちは!

I will write about Japanese grammar basics again today.

(6) Particles

Japanese particles are similar to English prepositions, such as “in” and “at”.
As you see below, English prepositions precede the noun, clause or phrase they modify.
Japanese particles are postpositions come after the noun, clause or phrase.

Ex. Kare no heya de bangohan o tabemashita. = I had dinner in his room.

Although particles themselves do not carry any meaning, they provide an important role in sentence formation.
The particle determines how the noun or clause functions in a sentence.

Ex.
Heya o soji shimasu. = I (will) clean my room. -> room is an object
Heya ga kirei desu. = My room is clean/beautiful. -> room is a subject
Heya de yasumimasu. = I (will) take a break in my room. -> room is a place for the action

 (7) Function and conjugation of “desu”

When “desu” is placed after a noun, it expresses the speaker’s polite attitude as well as tense.

Kare wa                 John-san      desu. (present)
He (as for him)       John                is

Kare wa               kashu          deshita (past)
He (as for him)      a singer        was

Kyo wa                           Kaze ga     tsumetai       desu.
Today (as for today)          the wind     is cold          (add politeness)

General features of Japanese sentence structures + grammars - 1

みなさん、こんにちは!

Today I will write about very basics of Japanese grammars and structures.

(1) Word order
A predicate (verb or adjective) comes at the end of a sentence.
Tense and whether it is affirmative or negative are revealed only when the last word of the sentence is spoken.
This is the reason that one must listen to the very end of a Japanese sentence to know whether it is negative/affirmative or question.

(2) omission
Words or phrases are often omitted if they are understood from the context.
Even the subject and object of a sentence are often omitted.

(3) Three basic structures
Japanese sentences can be divided into the following three patters.

① Noun sentence : (topic) wa (Noun) desu.
Ex. Watashi wa Suzuki desu. (I am Suzuki.)

② Adjective sentence : (topic) wa (Adjective) desu.
Ex. Kono inu wa kawaii desu. (This dog is cute.)

③ Verb sentence : (topic) wa (Verb).
Ex. Watashi wa arukimasu. (I (will) walk)
* “desu” has a similar function to “to be” in English, and comes at the end of Noun and
Adjective phrases.

(4) Negative Sentence
Negative Sentences are made by modifying the end of a predicate.
Ex. Kyo wa ame desu. -> Kyo wa ame dewa arimasen.
(Today is rain. = It is raining today.)

(5) Question sentences
Attach “ka” to the end of a Declarative Sentence to create a question sentence.
Ex. Kore wa oishii desu ka. (Is this tasty?)

“じゃ” does not always mean “Well” or “Well then”

みなさん、こんにちは!

There are some people who use “じゃ/ja” in wrong way.
It is often written “Well…” or “Well then…” in English for “じゃ/ja”.
For example, a conversation with a shop clerk like as follows :

A-san : How much is this?
( Kore wa ikura desu ka?)

 Shop Clerk : 1000yen.
          (1000yen desu.)

A-san : Well then, please give me that one.
      (Ja, kore kudasai.)

In this case “じゃ/ja” for “Well” usage is OK.

However, the next one sounds odd :

A-san : Did you go somewhere last weekend?
      (Shumatsu dokoka ikimashita ka?)
B-san : Well, I went to a beach with my girlfriend.
(Ja, kanojo to umi ni ikimashita.)

B-san was thinking about his weekend a bit then he answered it.
“え~と/eeto” is perfect to be used when you are thinking.

Photobucket
"Ja" is also used for "good bye" in a casual conversation.
design

ときどき「じゃ」の使い方を間違えている生徒さんがいます。
「じゃ」は英語の訳でよく”Well…” “Well then…” と書かれています。

例えば、お店の会話で
 Aさん: これはいくらですか?
 店員: 1000円です。
 Aさん: じゃ、これください。

この場合の「じゃ」=”Well” or “Well then” はOKです。

でも、次の場合は変です。

 Aさん: 週末どこか行ったんですか。

みなさん、こんにちは!

Our school has started from this week.
There are lots of new students come to the school, we have been very busy.
Today I will introduce a new Japanese text book which has been published quite recently for someone who are interested in studying Japanese a little bit.

Nihongo Fun & Easy
– Survival Japanese Conversation for Beginners–

Instead of grammars, phrases are written in this textbook to help the learners to be able to use what they studied very soon, it is suitable for survival Japanese.

このテキストは文法ではなく、フレーズで勉強できるようになっているのですぐに使えて、サバイバル・ジャパニーズにぴったりだと思います。

convince vs 説得(せっとく)する

みなさん、こんにちは!

I will write about a grammar today.

Some days ago, my student and I found out “説得(せっとく)する” does not mean "convince/persuade” which is a translation in a Japanese-English dictionary.

For example, if someone said he would not go to a party and 「彼を説得する」 is “try hard to tell him to go to the party giving him reasons or consequences” but it does not say to make him change his thoughts to go, i.e. we still do not know if he would go or not.

In my lesson, my advanced level student was not sure making an example sentence using 「説得する」 and I didn’t understand why because in the textbook its English meaning was given.
But we talked about the both 「説得する」 and “convince” then finally we came across there is a big difference between them as above.
It sure is confusing and difficult.

There is one more interesting topic related to the word “convince”.
In English they say “He is convincing”.
“Convincing” is an adjective which expresses about him how he is like, similar to “he is tall” or “he is kind”, for example.

On the contrary there is no adjective in Japanese expresses “convincing”.
「説得力のあるNoun」is used instead.
「彼は説得力のある人だ」is used for “He is convincing” in Japanese which literal meaning is “He has a power to convince.”
